Church Ladies Circle
Sykehouse Church Ladies Social Circle has at the present time 20 members; they are an organisation that put the Church first in the planning for the year. They were formed in 1989, and meet every fortnight on a Wednesday afternoon between 1.30pm and 3.30pm. They have about 3 or 4 charities each year that they support.
They organise the FESTIVAL OF GARDENS which are held in July, the proceeds going to the Church. THE CHRISTMAS MARKET, which they organise for November, the proceeds of which go into their funds, which are mainly used for the upkeep of the Churchyard, cleaning the Church windows, and this year they are paying towards a loop system for the hard of hearing.
Women's Institute
In 2005 the Women’s Institute celebrated its 90 year anniversary working for communities, justice and the environment.
Despite being a small village we are proud that we have just celebrated our fifty-third anniversary, thus making us the longest established ladies organisation within the village. Our 20 members meet in the village hall on the third Tuesday of each month at 7.15 pm and any villager wishing to join us would certainly be most welcome to share an introductory evening with us.
Each of our evening meetings have the usual announcements by our President, Mrs M Child of the various activities taking place within our South Yorkshire WI Federation, a competition and a guest speaker or activity. Recent events have included, a visit to the local Fieldgate Centre, a talk and demonstration by Andy Routhwaite a woodturner, a fund raising fashion show and a talk by Frank Morley on burials in South Yorkshire!
The year’s fund raising supports the over sixties New Year party where we provide tea and an evenings entertainment for some 40 people who join us.
Not only does the WI give a forum to discuss relevant village affairs and the impact we as a group can make upon our village it gives us an opportunity to embrace the national issues that are given the proper high profile by the NFWI, often relating to not only key UK issues but those involving women of the world as a whole.
Come and join us there is more to it than just jam and Jerusalem!
